PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Growing Ranunculus & Anemones

Your guide to getting those gorgeous spring blooms

Ranunculus and anemones are cool-season favorites prized for
their beautiful colors, distinctive flower forms, and long stems for cutting.
There are several ways to grow them, and the best approach depends on your
climate, soil, and growing setup.

Let's get you started with some general advice!

🌱 1. When Should You
Plant?

Fall planting: In climates with relatively mild
winters, growers can plant corms in fall for earlier spring blooms. In colder
regions, winter protection and excellent drainage are essential.

Late winter or early spring planting: Many growers in
colder climates wait until late winter or early spring to plant. This avoids
some of the risks associated with overwintering corms outdoors.

Neither approach is universally best. Consider your local
winter temperatures, soil conditions, and the protection you can provide.

💧 2. To Soak or Not to
Soak?

You'll find growers on both sides of this debate!

Pre-soaking: Some growers soak corms in
room-temperature water for a few hours before planting to help rehydrate them
after storage.

No soaking: Other growers plant dry corms directly
into prepared soil or potting mix, allowing them to absorb moisture gradually.

Both approaches are used successfully. If you choose to
soak, avoid prolonged soaking, keep the water well oxygenated by using a
bubbler or replacing the water every hour, and plant promptly afterward. Never
leave corms sitting in stagnant water.

🌸 3. Planting Your Corms

  • Depth:
Approximately 1–2 inches deep, adjusting for your soil and growing method.
  • Spacing:
Approximately 4–6 inches apart for a cut-flower planting.
  • Location:
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Orientation:
Ranunculus corms generally go in with their claw-like feet pointing down.
Anemone corms can be less obvious; plant them with the pointed end down if
identifiable, or on their side if you're unsure.

The most important thing is to avoid soggy soil. Excess
moisture can cause corms to rot before they establish.

💦 4. Watering

After planting, water according to your method and soil
conditions. Keep the growing medium appropriately moist during establishment
and active growth, but never waterlogged.

Corms need moisture to grow, but they also need oxygen.
Heavy, saturated soil is a recipe for trouble.

❄️ 5. What About Freezing
Temperatures?

Ranunculus and anemones are cool-season flowers, but that
doesn't mean every stage of growth tolerates a hard freeze.

  • Protect
actively growing plants when freezing weather is forecast.
  • Use
frost cloth supported over the plants, securing the edges.
  • Provide
additional protection during colder or prolonged freezes, recognizing that
         covers have limits.
  • For
fall-planted corms, consider winter protection appropriate to your climate
         and growing conditions.
  • Keep
soil well drained through cold, wet weather.

Frost protection reduces risk but cannot guarantee that
plants will survive every freeze.

🌷 6. The Secret to
Success

There isn't one universal planting calendar or preparation
method. Successful growers adapt to their climate, soil, and growing
conditions.

Cool weather, good drainage, and sensible moisture
management are the common threads.

Experiment with the approach that works best for your
garden, keep notes, and don't be afraid to learn from a little trial and error.

Happy growing, Flower Friends!

Planting times and growing results vary by variety,
climate, and growing method.
